Okay I'm not trying to gross you out...

This greeted me on my way in from lunch last week, hanging out on the door to my office building. Now since I hate bugs and spiders as much as a Hatfield hates a McCoy, I quietly tried to open the door without that sucker flying into my face. It was huge! That's not the bad part of the story...

Yesterday I was teasing my daughter about the bug sound she could hear outside the window. (She also hates bugs and spiders.) If you live anywhere where the summers are kind of humid, you've heard the song of the cicadas. Now I didn't know what a cicada looked like. You hear them all the time but rarely see one. My kid being the daughter of an information junkie (me) asked me what a cicada looked like and of course I looked it up. Guess what that giant bugger up there is? Yeah a cicada.

Now in 36 years of living with the sounds of cicadas echoing in my ears during the summer I have never been worried about them. But now that I know what it looks like, I could feel myself freaking out as we walked home from the laundrymat and I could hear them singing in the trees overhead. Eeel!!! What if one fell into my hair?! I would have looked pretty strange running down the street screaming pushing a bright red shopping cart full of laundry.

So cute, so round...

Someone posted a picture of me from fifth grade on Facebook....ooh those were the round days. This is a picture of me on my way to Spring Concert in sixth grade. I was singing a gospel duet with a kid named Daniel. Back then it was cute...now not so much since he went to jail for killing a priest in a local church. **sigh**

No Fat Girl Flea for me!

Unfortunately, the little girl came down with a cold so we're staying in today. So my fellow fatshionistas if you're in the city, check it out, shop, get your bargains, and pray for me in hopes I don't get puked on today.

Partners in (Art) Crime

Who's that little girl? Well that's my little girl at the Handmade Cavalcade two weekends ago in Beacon, NY. Even though she's only six, she's already displaying artistic talent. She has a series of bright girls she forever sketching. Her future career goal is to be an art teacher so she can make art like her mommy and all the people she sells with. (AWWWW, how can I not love her?)

Last weekend, we tried our hand at making paper out of old catalogs and dried roses my beau gave her for her birthday.

Messy work but came out pretty decent for a first try.

A Day at AMNH with my six year old --- well sort of

My daughter just completed kindergarten and scored very high on her standardized test (97% Reading, 85% Language, 96% Math to be exact) So as a treat I decided to take her to a day at the American Museum of Natural History. "Night at the Museum" with Ben Stiller is one of her favorite movies so I figured it was a great way to expose her to a great museum. Right?

Wrong!!!

A half hour into the tour she wanted to go home and after seeing the pelts of mice and scary owls it was a done deal. Well at least I got some pictures of her with the dinosaurs.
