Wedding Challenge Voting

The Jewelry on Etsy Team (JET), EtsyFAST, and ETSY Greetings street teams have come together to offer their members a creative Wedding Challenge. Members were challenged to design a “jewelry”, “fiber”, or “paper” item inspired by a featured bride’s wedding details. The bride and groom were chosen from another online community, Our Little Universe. The challenge - to create a piece that would be a perfect fit for their - Autumn and John’s - wedding event. The piece could be for the wedding, reception or the honeymoon - the choice was left to the designer.

Info on the bride and groom (as well as the challenge itself) can be found at the EtsyFast blog and in the FAST wedding challenge subforum and on the team blogs of the JET and EtsyGreetings teams.

FAST has the honors of hosting the voting for EtsyGreetings (the paper entries). Voting is open from April 29 until midnight EST May 6th and the results will be announced on May 9th. So skip on over, check it out, and vote!!!

Save That Old Bangle!

Somewhere between high school and college, I developed this obsession with silver jewelry. Maybe it was the overabundance of door knocker earrings, fat gold chains, and four finger rings dominating my high school culture that turned me off to the shiny yellow stuff. (Not that my mom ever let me wear anything cool or hip anyway.)

During college I searched for interesting silver pieces to complement my "special" sense of style. Now, eleven years after graduation, they're sitting in a jewelry box tarnishing away.

So how could I save the old pieces of jewelry that oxidiation claimed? I decided to refashion them by crocheting over them with scrap yarn. This way I can use remnants of yarn I have laying around and recycle jewelry that has sentimental value. Want to make your own crocheted bangle?

Start by cleaning up some of the tarnish. You can do this by first lining a glass casserole dish with aluminum foil. Place your jewelry on top of the foil and sprinkle liberally with baking soda. Pour boiling water over the jewelry till its covered. (It's going to bubble and fizz but that's normal.) Let sit for ten minutes, then rinse with cold water. This baking soda bath will clean some, if not all, of the tarnish off. Now comes the fun part.
Supplies Needed:

  • Bangle Bracelet
  • Size J Crochet Hook
  • Small Ball of Yarn
With yarn and hook:
1: Chain 30.
2. (Now we'll connect the yarn to the bangle. ) Hold the bangle in the same hand you are holding your leading yarn.

2. Start to single crochet into the second chain. Insert the hook under the top loop of the second chain from the hook, as shown in the photo (do not count the loop already on the hook when determining which chain is the second chain from the hook.

3. Yarn over hook and pull through first two loops on hook. At this point, you have 2 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the remaining loops to finish a single crochet.

4. Continue working your way across the row, attaching the yarn to the bracelet by repeating steps 1 - 3 to the end of your chain.

5. Slip stitch the end of your row to the top of the beginning of your row. Fasten off and weave ends. Ta Da!!!

If you don't have a silver bangle, use a plastic or wood one. Whatever you have handy is fine. You can certainly adapt the directions to a smaller bangle, or a bangle of different material. You can also use different weights of yarn for this project. A lighter weight of yarn or thread will result in a lighter feel of the design. It may also allow more of the bangle to show through. This can be a nice effect paired with the color of the yarn.

There are many other ways you can crochet over jewelry to create new and interesting pieces. Crochet over old rings with thread to add a dash of color. Add earwires to a thinner bangle to make earrings that pop!

These beat any old doorknocker earrings!

Experiment with different ideas and make your old jewelry new again.

Well after some initial hesitation...

Yesterday I took the plunge and chopped off my hair. No relaxers, no color...just natural hair. We'll see how this goes...

Handmade Faire WrapUp - Finally!!!

Well last week I did the Handmade Faire in Waretown, NJ. What an absolutely awesome show! Well organized and great vendors. Abbie and Pola did a first class job! It was my first showing of just my own products and I realize I really have to get cracking on my production and displays. Got to meet more members of the EtsyNJ Team and even picked up alittle something for myself and the kid from Kecia of Lemoncholy's.

OMG! Can I just say her stuff is AMAZING!! I had to drag myself away from the table with one item for me and one for the kid. I can only hope to be at her level of design with collage/mixed media.

To Rebrand or Not

In the two+ years since I began Collective Elements, it has gone through many transformations. I have rebranded several times but one look just seemed to fit perfectly with my vision. So after some thought, I'm returning to the clean font title and floral background from 2007. I really like the look and feel of this background and the colors. I hope you enjoy.

Yarnbombing Submission Call

Are you a knitter or crochetier? Do you design (or want to design) unusual pieces of street art out of yarn?

If so, you should design a pattern for Yarn Bombing: The Art of Knit Graffiti, to be published by Arsenal Pulp Press in fall 2009.

A DIY guide to the art of yarn graffiti and a history of hand-crafted textile street art, Yarn Bombing will feature patterns such as street-smart disguises, useful wearable tools like gloves and tool belts, street art such as knit car cozies, bike covers and headlight toques, and outdoor installations such as crochet shawls for leafy trees. The sky’s the limit as long as it’s knit or crocheted! Projects should be fun, colorful and a little bit wacky.

Designers are asked to submit a sketch and detailed description of their project, along with a brief bio, by the submission deadline of May 30, 2008.

Last minute prep for Handmade Faire - April 20 - Waretown, NJ

Been busy prepping inventory for this weekend's Handmade Faire in Waretown. I'm like a busy crafty beaver. So sleepy and so wired at the same time. I have a few more products to make but at some point I'm going to have to stop.

This is my first fair where I'm exhibiting my wares only so I'm a tad bit nervous but feeling good. My trusty helpers (Mom, Aunt Laraine, and Evie) will be there to assist me so that always promises a good day.

Yay! It's the Handmade Faire!

Indiepublic Has a New Owner!

You may remember me posting a little while back about Indiepublic being for sale. Well it has a new owner! Read below:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Indiepublic Members,

As many of you are aware, I have been searching for a new owner for Indiepublic.  I am happy to announce that the search is over, and it is with great excitement that I introduce Casie Metcalf. She has not only proven to be capable both technically and creatively, but perhaps what is most important is her dedication to the indie spirit.

With an interest in vintage and the graphic arts, Casie is native of Maine and the mother of a darling 2 1/2 son. She brings to Indiepublic 10 years of experience in the newspaper industry, with an emphasis on marketing. Casie's skills are therefore perfectly suited to providing additional promotional and advertising opportunities for Indiepublic's members.

To my dear friends at Indiepublic: It has been a pleasure meeting and getting to know many of you, and I wanted to thank all of you for the opportunity to serve you! Although it is with great regret that I leave Indiepublic, I am also equally optimistic about what the future holds.

I am fully confident that Casie is the right fit for Indiepublic, and hope that you will extend to her the same warmth and friendliness that have made Indiepublic such a uniquely wonderful and vibrant community. I hope you will join me in welcoming Casie to our community! =)

Bidding you all a fond farewell,
Sion

I'm a true blue Jersey Girl but...

I miss working in the city (New York City, that is)...especially by Central Park. I used to work for a company called MoviebankUSA on 57th and 7th right across from Carnegie Hall. What bliss!!

My current job sent me for Access training Monday and Tuesday on 57th and Madison so I had the pleasure of passing the Park and the Plaza Hotel.

Paper Covered Candles

They're not completely done but my boyfriend said I "made the hell out of them". LOL. That's quite a compliment coming from him. He is in no way interested in my "artsy-craftsy" stuff.
